What am I making?
Drawing and painting have always been something I've done in phases throughout my life. As a child, I did it for fun, to process something, or to capture a memory (usually a powerful moment). During my study, I also used it to understand text and memorize the anatomical names of structures. Another common thread was that I loved varying the medium I used, with ink and graphite always recurring. My comfort zone lies in realism, though I don't strive for photorealism. My goal is to maintain the human element. I'm finding a foray into more evocative and abstract work increasingly enjoyable and challenging. The subjects I depict are very diverse, with (animal) portraits, human stories, healthcare, and nature continuing to inspire me the most.
Illustrations
Illustrations have been and continue to be very important to me, especially during my medical studies, in the consulting room as a gastroenterologist, and as a medical teacher. They help clarify a text by visually conveying what is being described and meant. Besides their educational or informative purpose, illustrations can tell a story, evoke an emotion, or address a topic. Many illustrators and artists serve as sources of inspiration. Other sources of inspiration for me include my surroundings, nature, the people I meet, the (personal) stories I read or hear, science, history, healthcare, and my own experiences. I create most commissioned illustrations directly digitally, or I start with traditional media (pencil, ink, watercolor) and then digitize them.
The possibilities for using my illustrations are very diverse. Examples of examples in the medical and scientific field include illustrations to highlight a visual abstract, an article, an infographic, for a museum, a lesson, a textbook, a (patient) brochure, a poster, or for the consulting room. The other illustrations can be used for brochures, texts, personalized cards, posters, murals, limited edition prints, or other printed/sprayed artwork. This list is certainly not exhaustive. Do you have any other ideas? Let me know.
Fine art
You've probably already browsed the website. Here's a selection of what I've created. Generally, it's realistic and recognizable work, with occasional forays into more abstract art. I create work in various techniques and at different price points. My independent work is often inspired by my surroundings, my own experiences or observations, stories from special times, and characteristic people and animals.
I also enjoy creating commissioned pieces. This could be a unique gift, a portrait of a loved one (both human and animal), capturing a memory, or simply decorating a wall.
Contact me, and I'd be happy to discuss what I can do for you. I can also inform you about the possibilities for purchasing an existing work. This could be an original or, in some cases, a professionally printed print.
